Here we take a look at Neil Denari's HL23 where the message is as clear as glass: architecture marches on, at least near Manhattan's much anticipated High Line Park anyway. Architect Neil Denari has conceived a form that bends and folds into its tight surroundings. The challenge is a 40 foot wide lot near Tenth Avenue which is partly covered by the High Line. The condo will rise up on one side and then slightly cantilever over the old elevated railway bed. Glass will reveal structural crossbeams that look almost like tiebacks holding everything together against gravity. The condo will include nine floor-through apartments ranging in size from about 1,900 square feet to 2,600 square feet. The penthouse duplex unit will have 3,700 square feet and a terrace. A ground floor duplex will also be available.

House O_ 2007 Chiba, Japan

A weekend house for a couple located on a rocky coast two hours drive from Tokyo. They are planning to settle down this place in the future. The site is a rocky stretch facing the Pacific Ocean with approaches sloping down to the water level. The characteristic of its plan, imagined like the branches of a tree, is a continuous one room.

"the u+a pre-designed mini hi-rise is not only a tightly designed house that uses every square inch of space wisely, it also attempts to express this economy in its smooth exterior surface shape, a form of industrial design at an architectural scale."

Tokyo is filled with tiny buildings on awkward sites –
what fellow Tokyo-based architect Yoshiharu Tsukamoto
has called “pet architecture". These are wedged onto tiny
slivers of land left over from the slicing and dicing of
land by urban planning and property development processes.

VilLA NM NY

In the design for this single family house the sloping site is used as a device for programmatic and volumetric organization. A box-like volume bifurcates into two separate volumes; one seamlessly following the northern slope; the other lifted above the hill creating a covered parking space and generating a split-level internal organization. The volumetric transition is generated by a set of five parallel walls that rotate along a horizontal axis from vertical to horizontal. The ruled surface maintaining this transition is repeated five times in the building. From inside the huge window strips from floor to ceiling allow a fluid continuity between interior and landscape. From the exterior the reflective glass seams to become one with its surroundings.
